Twin rough tone towers topped with eagles frame the entry plaza into the US Hot Springs Reservation in downtown Hot Springs AR.
The towers are inscribed with the names and service dates of consecutive Secretaries of the Interior from 1889-1907. Can you spot the goof? Hint: The 'K' in the name Hoke Smith is upside down - oops!
The error is clearly seen when comparing the K in Hoke to the K in Hitchcock.
The towers read as follows:
Left tower:
"[W side]
HOKE SMITH
Secretary of the Interior
1893-1896
U. S. HOT SPRINGS RESERVATION
[S side]
DAVID R. FRANCIS
Secretary of the Interior
1896-1897"
Right Tower:
[N side]
E. A. HITCHCOCK
Secretary of the Interior
1898-1907
[W side]
JOHN W. NOBLE
Secretary of the Interior
1889-1893
U. S. HOT SPRINGS RESERVATION"
The elegant plaza that leads to the Grand Promenade is the work of Captain Robert E. Stevens, US Army Engineer.
