Quinnipiac is the Native American name for the Connecticut River. This abstract sculpture by Robert Murray is formed by two rippled plates of aluminum and Cor-Ten steel that are standing on edge to form 6" thick by 18' high by 17' by 14' freestanding arch.

The sculpture is painted red, the adopted color of the University of Massachusetts. It's position as an arch frames both the entrance to the Fine Arts Center and, upon leaving the building, the Haigis Mall.

The sculpture was funded with $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places program. It was fabricated by Lippincott of North Haven, CT and installed in its present location in 1975.

A plaque beneath the arch is inscribed:
