Located at the SW corner of Highway 3 and Howell Avenue is a figurative metal sculpture by artist Ralph Starritt. The sculpture comprises a male figure on a pack train horse with another pack train horse standing nearby.

This sculpture represents a typical miner who passed through Etna 150 years ago. Etna begin as a flour mill site and the California Gold Rush brought thousands of men to Scott Valley hoping to strike it rich. Etna became a supply link for these miners on their way to various mines in the hills and mountains of the region.

Artist Ralph Starritt has created a number of welded steel sculptures throughout northern California and southern Oregon. He makes his home in Yreka, CA and has a studio there. I've waymarked other Starritt sculptures, particularly, The Miner; Fireman and Dog; K9; Montague; Eagle Takes Flight; and Peter Britt.
