The driver of a dark Honda missed hitting the downtown area’s historic fountain by inches, ripping several decorative stanchions from the concrete and mowing through hedges when he lost control of his car shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, authorities said.
The driver “was transported to the hospital with minor injuries,” said Sgt. Darren Hall.
The cause of the crash at Plaza Square Park was still under investigation at 7 a.m. and the driver had not yet been cited, Hall said.
As to the cost of the incident, “We are still assessing the damage and do not have an estimate yet,” said Paul Sitkoff, a spokesman for the city, on Monday.
