The 4,350' Indigo Tunnel on the Western Maryland Railway was built in 1904. Tha last train passed through the on May 21st 1975 and the railroad was abandoned. A 22 mile segment of the roadbed from Big Pool on the C & O Canal to Pearre (pronounced Paree so I'm told by locals) has been paved as the Western Maryland Railtrail. Current plans call for the tunnel to be rehabbed and included into the trail extending the trail to Little Orleans.
The coords noted are for the East Portal which is accessible from the C & O Canal towpath. It is located at the 138.25 mile mark of the Canal. It is about 2.25 miles from the current end of Trail at Pearre. The West Portal is approximately 1 mile from Little Orleans.
