The castle, with the surviving parts of fortifications a valuable urban and architectural heritage site, an important monument of the town and the country, founded by Jindrich of Rožmberk. The castle was devastated and remodelled several times. In the 18th century it was converted into a brewery. A cold store with a valuable brick vault was built outside the castle palace at the same time. The brewery was in operation until 1951. A reconstruction of the dilapidated northern wing was started at the end of the 20th century. The castle palace received a roof, the original Gothic walls were repaired by the conservation method and a special glass container was placed inside and is used as municipal library.

Hrad byl založen Jindrichem z Rožmberka jako typicky mestský hrad. Patrí k nejvýznamnejším památkám mesta, ale i k významným památkám celostátního významu. Spolu se zbytky opevnení tvorí urbanisticky a architektonicky velice hodnotný celek. Hrad byl nekolikrát ponicen a prestavován. V 18. století byl prestaven na pivovar. V téže dobe byla postavena lednice pred hradním palácem s hodnotnou cihelnou klenbou. Pivovar ukoncil svoji cinnost až v roce 1951. Od konce 20. století se zapocalo s rekonstrukcí zchátralého severního krídla hradního paláce. Hradní palác byl zastrešen, puvodní gotické zdivo bylo opraveno konzervacní metodou a dovnitr byl umísten speciální sklenený kontejner, který je využit jako mestská knihovna. Obnovou prošly sklepní prostory hradu spolu s lednicí. V soucasné dobe probíhá rekonstrukce hospodárské budovy a plánuje se úprava nádvorí.
