The Acropolis is one the most famous cultural sites on the planet. Although there is evidence of habitation dating back some 5,000 years, it was Pericles who coordinated construction of the Parthenon about 2,4000 years ago. In deference to its builders, the Parthenon and its adjacent buildings and temples remained remarkably intact until the Venetians seriously damaged it in 1657 when a gunpowder stock stored in the Parthenon exploded.
From the European Heritage website:
"As an outstanding example of ancient architectural development, the site comprises the Acropolis hill, its north, south and east slopes, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, the Library of Hadrian the Hills, the Pnyx, Areopagus, Philopappos (Muses) and Nymphs (Observatory) as well as the Kerameikos workshops and cemetery."
Today restoration and reclamation work is constantly in motion.
The Acropolis had previously been included with the European Heritage Sites list of 2006, but now has been included within the Heart of Ancient Athens as of 2014.
