Mr. Smith's modern, gray granite headstone has this inscription:
April 15, 1868
Dec. 28, 1943
Died of Sulfamertazine
Kidney Block
---
There is no indication as to what a "Sulfamertazine Kidney Block" is. If this is a reference to "sulfamethazine", it is possible that Mr. Smith inadvertently took this medication, which is more commonly used in veterinary circles, and suffered kidney blockage. Or, he was being treated with it, and failure occurred. If anything, one can but wonder why this cause of death was indicated on the headstone, as kidney failure and blockage are otherwise common ways to meet one's maker.
