Matthew Loughmiller, the artist, is an art teacher at Canton Intermediate School, and his signature -- "Matthew Loughmiller Oct. 2012" is in the lower left corner of the mural. Given the appearance of people in the mural, most looking toward the viewer, the odds are pretty good that there's a photo from this time period upon which the mural is based. This section of the building is painted a dark red, and a white border -- as in "photo" -- is around the mural. There are two photos in the gallery of the square in 2017, and while one can make out the JT Hodges Building (1893), there have been dramatic changes to these buildings over time. The Odd Fellows Building is gone completely.
The colors are lifelike, and going from left to right, we see:
G.W. Tull Building (1892), with two horses and a buggy parked in front of what was then the "Palace Drug Store Cold Drinks".
G.W. Tull Building (1893), with My Way Home Restaurant -- note the barrel -- and the Mathis Meat Market. Two gents stand in front of the entrance, where it looks like a menu is behind them.
J.T. Hodges Building (1893), home to Bide & Jim Groceries and Racket, "Goods" There are a few people inside, shopping -- but almost all looking in our direction -- and a few on the sidewalk. A draft mule, with a yellow blanket, is waiting patiently, hooked to a buggy that says "Groceries Bide & Jim."
J.W. Andrews Building (1893), home to Nolen Brothers Druggists, with a sign behind three black hitching posts, "Nolen Bros. Drug Store".
Texas State Bank Building. No, you can't read that white writing in the windows, even up close.
Odd Fellows Hall, where the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows Lodge #446 -- note the three chain links, for Friendship, Love and Truth -- met on Monday night, their sign above a red awning.
