Use of a horizontal stone was found to be more effective. As stated on the marker, it was brought from Mexico by oxcart. Corn was the most likely product ground. Water from a tributary of the Cosumnes River was the power source. Deer Creek area is still a rich farmland.
Hops were grown nearby for forty or more years.
