This straight, mostly paved trail starts on Presidio Blvd, just east of Funston Avenue in the Presidio. The trail proceeds in a straight line southeast to the Opening Gate of the Presidio at Presidio Boulevard and Pacific Avenue. For a long portion of the trail, it parallels Andy Goldstein's Wood Line, a natural sculpture in the Presidio.

From the National Park Service website:

The trail begins at Funston Avenue & Presidio Blvd., crosses a tiny brick footbridge over the creek running down Tennessee Hollow from El Polin spring, passes enlisted men's and officers' houses from the 1930s and ends at the Presidio Boulevard Gate. Presidio lore has it that this path continued to Mission Dolores about three miles to the southwest. Although it is likely that the Presidio to mission path followed a slightly different course, it is certain that U.S. soldiers used Lovers Lane to access the trolley line to visit their lovers and family in San Francisco starting in the late 1800s.
