There are several flora and fauna information signs at the Matfield Green KTA Service Area, Towanda KS.

This waymarked sign reads:

"HOME ON THE RANGE
“Buffalo is our money. The ropes we can prepare and trade. Just as it makes a white man’s heart field to have his money carried away, so it makes us feel to see others killing and stealing our buffaloes. – Chief Kicking Bear

In 1874, the last bison (commonly known as buffalo) hunt was held in Kansas. Hides were bringing up to $4.00 each, as thousands upon thousands of these majestic animals fell prey to hunters. Large herds of bison soon became a thing of the past on the Kansas prairie, like the grizzly bears, elk, and wolves that once roamed the grasslands.

Today, the prairies plant diversity of over 400 species still supports an abundance of wildlife. A few private landowners even keep bison. Look closely as you travel the Turnpike and you may see some of the creatures pictured here. For more wildlife viewing opportunities, visit El Dorado State Park and Wildlife Area."
