HOUSTON (KTRK) -- METRO says a woman who was killed by a light rail train Friday morning did not have the right of way when she rode her bike into the train's path.

The victim has been identified as 66-year-old Marjorie Corcoran, a physics and astronomy professor at Rice University.

Corcoran died after she was run over by the METRORail at Fannin and Sunset, prompting crews to shut down the roadway in both directions.

Houston police said she crossed in front of the train on her bike after coming from the Hermann Park side of Fannin.

It was not immediately clear whether or not Corcoran was wearing headphones at the time of the crash.
Tragically, investigators said her body became trapped underneath the train, and could not be pulled out until METRO moved the vehicle forward.

A bicycle was seen by SkyEye crumpled between the light rail train and a loading platform.

Ghost bike memorial put up for beloved Rice scientist Marjorie Corcoran off of Main Street

In February, Rice scientist Marjorie Corcoran died after being struck by a Metro light rail train on her way to campus.

And now a ghost bike memorial has been set up off of Main Street near Sunset where the accident occurred.
Ghost bikes are bicycles that have been painted white and placed where a cyclist has been killed. They are chained near where the accident happened and are decorated with memorabilia and flowers to honor the late cyclist.

"She was very concerned about what was best for the students - both our undergraduate students and our graduate students. She always had an open door - both for her students and her colleagues," said Professor Doug Natelson, chairman of the physics and astronomy department at Rice.

Corcoran, 66, died February 3 after she was struck by a Metro light rail train while riding her bicycle near Hermann Park. She was heading toward the campus about 8:15 a.m. when she crossed over the southbound tracks along the 6300 block of Fannin near Sunset. Corcoran was pronounced dead at the scene. Metro officials said the investigation is continuing but that the train had the right-of-way.
