Located just west of Blairsville's bandstand, the new memorial is fronted by a brick platform to be used in future ceremonies and is displayed against a 300-foot-long wall that was constructed perpendicular to Market Street. The wall is topped by three poles displaying the U.S., Pennsylvania and POW/MIA flags.
The memorial is meant to replace a previous monument listing mostly local World War II veterans that stood along East Market Street until the 1970s, when it fell into disrepair and was removed.
The new memorial was dedicated on July 10, 2015, The memorial consists of nearly 7,000 pounds of granite that was designed by a committee of veterans from Blairsville American Legion Post 0407, purchased through Blairsville's Shoemaker Monument Company and lowered into place by Clawson Construction. A central monument listing area service members who died or became missing during World War II is flanked by another honoring World War I casualties and a third recognizing those who made the supreme sacrifice in the Korean War and in all conflicts since.
