This simple but stylish rectangular plaque for Charles Arthur Cain is mounted on an interior wall of the baptistry of the church of Our Lady Star of the Sea & Saint Maughold in Ramsey.

The plaque is made of dark grey stone and features an inscription in gold lettering as well 'Archibald Knox style' decoration, again in gold.

The plaque is in the baptistry because Charles Arthur commissioned the railings which completed this chapel. The railings were manufactured to designs originally created by Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of the Church.

The inscription on the memorial is as follows:
‘CHARLES ARTHUR CAIN M.A. (CANTAB)
28 APRIL 1938 – 19 MARCH 2015
ADORED BY HIS FAMILY
Benefactor of this Church which he loved
He commissioned these railings , which completed this chapel,
Manufactured using Gilbert Scott’s original plans.
Passionate Manxman
Musician – Politician – Philanthropist
Visiting Professor – Financier – Yachtsman
He was an inspiration to many with his energy and enthusiasm
NULLI SECUNDUS – CHA ROW EH SY YNNYD’

The first two words of the inscription are in Latin and translate as ‘Second to None’; the remainder of this line of the inscription is in Manx Gaelic and I believe translates as ‘He was second to none’.

Charles Arthur was indeed a true Manxman as he was born in Peel on the west coast of the Isle of Man.

He was also a politician serving as Member of the House of Keys (the Island's Parliament) for Ramsey, between 1981 and 1986.
