His death was reported in the Southern Mail newspaper on 5 June 1942 & reproduced in Trove Digitised Newspapers, the National Library of Australia as (in part):

CYCLIST KILLED

A fateful coincidence terminated a young life of considerable promise when Edward Bernard Gallagher, stepson of Mr. Casserley, of the staff of Nattai Shire, rode his bicycle into a stationary car on the Bowral - Mittagong Road at about 6 o'clock on Tuesday evening. The car, driven by Mrs. Hawkins, had pulled up because its lights had failed at the moment when Gallagher who was also without a light, reached the spot. He struck the side of the car causing an injury to Mrs. Hawkins' arm as she was opening the door. The bicycle was deflected and went over the embankment, throwing Gallagher heavily on his head. He suffered a fracture of the skull and was taken by ambulance to the District Hospital, but died shortly after admission.

His headstone features gold lettering on blue granite & is worded:
