His death was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald published 4 November 1940 & reproduced in Trove Digitised Newspapers, the National Library of Australia as:

"BODY ON RAILWAY
Bowral Sunday

The mutilated body of Edward James Bryant 65, of Fitzroy, near Mittagong, was found near the railway line near a tunnel between Bowral and Mittagong, early yesterday morning."

His headstone is worded:

In loving memory of our dear father
Edward James Bryant
Accidentally killed 2nd November 1940
Aged 65 years
At Rest.
