It is on the site of part of the old market halls of the central market of Bruges that was built, between 1887 and 1921, the gigantic provincial palace which occupies all the East part of the Markt, that is to say the Great ' square.
It is a neo-Gothic building, a surprising choice at a time when this style, then booming across the Atlantic, began to go out of fashion in Europe. Its monumental facade is one of the architectural masterpieces of the turn of the twentieth century, which has its roots in the exuberance of architecture of the late Middle Ages.
This impressive Neo-Gothic building was built in two phases (1887-1892 and 1914-1921) and is reminiscent of the Gothic facades of Bruges Town Hall and the Gruuthuse Lords' Palace.
Famous artists such as the Pickerys were responsible for interior decoration, stained glass and ironwork. The building on the left was originally intended to become the governor's residence.
The building was used as a government meeting room until 1999, and is now mainly a ceremonial building, and also used for exhibitions.

C'est sur l'emplacement d'une partie des anciennes halles du marché central de Bruges que fut construit, entre 1887 et 1921, le gigantesque palais provincial qui occupe tout le pan Est du Markt, c'est-à-dire la Grand' place.
C'est un édifice de style néo-gothique, un choix surprenant à une époque où ce style, alors en plein essor outre-Atlantique, commençait à passer de mode en Europe. Sa façade monumentale est l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre de l'architecture du tournant du XXème siècle, qui prend ses sources dans l'exubérance de l'architecture de la fin du Moyen-âge.
Cet impressionnant bâtiment de style néogothique a été construit en deux phases (1887-1892 et 1914-1921) et rappelle les façades gothiques de l'hôtel de ville de Bruges et le palais des seigneurs de Gruuthuse.
Des artistes renommés tels que les Pickery se sont chargés de la décoration intérieure, des vitraux et de la ferronnerie. Le bâtiment de gauche devait à l'origine devenir la résidence du gouverneur.
Le bâtiment a été utilisé comme salle de réunion du gouvernement jusqu'en 1999, et est maintenant principalement un bâtiment cérémoniel, et également utilisé pour des expositions.
