The waymarked historical marker is located on the Liberty Walk inside of the Thomas Polk park. It is incised in a panel around the waterfall. The marker reads as follows:
"Following the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, Mecklenburg County became the state’s largest cotton producer. With the coming of the railroads the 1850s, Charlotte emerged as a transportation and business center. A textile boom revived the area’s economy in the 1880s, and by 1904 approximately 300 cotton mills, possessing one-half of the looms and spindles of the South, were located within a 100 mile radius."
