The Saint Symphorien church of Azay le Rideau is one of the most beautiful Romanesque works of Touraine. It has an anterior front with double gable, one for the main nave of the XIth in the Romanesque style, a second added in the 16th century in a more Gothic style.
A massive bell-tower adorns the north facade, while the southern facade is adorned with a small building housing the seigniorial chapel with a dome.
Built under the domination of the Counts of Blois or the Counts of Anjou in the first half of the eleventh century. Enlarged successively in the 12th and 13th centuries and finished at the beginning of the 17th century with the construction of the second nave and the seigniorial chapel added in 1603.
Exceptionally, the main facade retains many Merovingian elements, apparently embedded in a construction of the beginning of the 2nd millennium, replaced by an older building.
Including a series of sculptures dating from the 5th / 6th centuries, including elements of bestiaries, and especially on two levels, on both sides of the central windows and above it, two groups of seven niches housing sculptures representing Christ and characters sometimes haloed.

L'église Saint Symphorien d'Azay le Rideau est une des plus belles réalisation romanes de Touraine. Elle présente une façade antérieure à double pignon, l'un pour la nef principale du XIème dans le style roman, un second ajouté au XVIeme siècle dans un style plus gothique.
Une tour-clocher, d'allure massive, orne la façade nord tandis que la façade sud s'orne, hors œuvre, d'un petit bâtiment abritant la chapelle seigneuriale, coiffée d'un dôme.
Construite sous la domination des comtes de Blois ou des comtes d'Anjou dans la 1ère moitié du XIe siècle. Agrandie successivement aux XIIe et XIIIe siècle et terminée au tout début du XVIIème siècle avec la construction de la seconde nef et de la chapelle seigneuriale ajoutée en 1603.
Fait exceptionnel, la façade principale conserve de nombreux éléments mérovingiens, apparemment incrustés dans une construction du début du 2eme millénaire, remplois d'un édifice plus ancien.
Notamment une série de sculptures datées du Ve / VIème siècles, dont des éléments de bestiaires, et surtout sur deux niveaux, de part et d'autre de la fenêtres centrale et au dessus d'elle, deux groupes de sept niches abritant des sculptures représentant le christ et des personnages parfois nimbés.
