San Giorgio Maggiore is a basilica designed by Andrea Palladio in the classical renaissance style and built between 1566 and 1610. On either side of the central portal are statues of Saint George and of Saint Stephen, to whom the church is also dedicated. The interior of the church is very bright, with massive engaged columns and pilasters on undecorated, white-surfaced walls. The interior combines a long basilican nave with a cruciform plan with transepts. The artworks include paintings by Jacopo & Domenico Tintoretto, Sebastiano Ricci and Jacopo & Leandro Bassano.
The original campanile in front of the church, collapsed in 1442 during a storm and was rebuilt. A new tower, behind the church, was built in 1729 by Scalfarrotto following the collapse of the previous campanile in 1726. This one itself collapsed in 1774 and was rebuilt in 1791 by Fra Benadetto Buratti in neo-classic style. It is 63 m (206 ft) tall and houses electromechanical bells. A lift takes you to the top, giving panoramic views towards San Marco and into the monastery's cloisters.
