This park was named for Michael J. Hunter, a young man from the area who lost his life serving our country in Vietnam. A granite monument is located on S. Chickasaw Avenue on the south side of the park. The park is across the street from the ruins of the L'Ouverture School, a WPA-constructed school for black children, during the days of segregation.
The park is a city block in size and contains a baseball field, two basketball courts, a wading pool, playground, picnic pavilions, rest rooms and a walking trail. It is located at the intersection of E. Chickasaw Avenue and S. 14th.
A granite monument tells the story of the man this park is dedicated to: "Michael J. Hunter Memorial Park / Born 1946 - Died 1967 / Dedicated to the memory of Michael J. Hunter who was killed in action by hostile enemy fire on Mar. 27, 1967 while serving his country with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Awarded Vietnam Cross for Gallantry, Purple Heart and Bronze Star with V Device for Bravery. Attended L'Ouverture School and esteemed by the community."
