A monument honoring French-Canadian historian and poet François-Xavier Garneau is located at La Place de l'Assemblée-Nationalethe on the Grand Allée just outside the St. Louis Gate in Quebec City.

A large monument honoring French-Canadian historian and poet François-Xavier Garneau has a life size bronze statue of the writer seated on an arm-less chair. He is wearing a long tailed coat, vest, and bow tie while holding a quill, in writing position, in his right hand. He has his left hand on his right knee. A stack of books lies under the chair as well as an umbrella. The statue is set on a 6' high by 4' square polished red granite base which is enhanced with bronze decorations.

A dado on the front of the base is inscribed:

François-Xavier Garneau was born on June 15, 1809 in Quebec City, PQ, Canada. He was educated at Quebec seminary and then studied law. He became a civil servant, holding the position of City Clerk of Quebec from 1845 until his death in 1866. François-Xavier Garneau is most famous as an historian and poet who strongly supported the preservation of French culture in Quebec.

As a historian François-Xavier Garneau wrote several volumes about the history of Canada. Histoire du Canada depuis sa découverte jusqu'à nos jours, 1845–52. (History of Canada from its discovery to the present day, 1845-52.)

Voyage en Angleterre et en France, dans les années 1831, 1832 et 1833. (Travel to England and France, in the years 1831, 1832 and 1833.)

Abrégé de l'histoire du Canada, depuis sa découverte jusqu'à 1840 : à l'usage des maisons d'éducation. (A short history of Canada, from its discovery until 1840: for the use of houses of education.)
