The Talimena Scenic Highway (State Highway 1) is a 54-mile, two-lane highway which winds its way through the Ouchita, Winding Stair and Rich Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma into Arkansas. At the west end is the town of Talimena, OK, and at the east end, Mena, AR. The highway locally is also known as Robert Samuel Kerr Skyline Drive.
Approximately 6 miles west of the border of Oklahoma and Arkansas, there is a scenic pull-off known as Castle Rock Vista. From this point, a 1/3 mile walking trail leads to a rocky point called Castle Rock, from which you can look in all directions over the beautiful forest and countryside. This is one of the highest points of the Ouachita Mountains.
Near the parking area is this map of the Talimena Highway, with a large STAR at the point you are standing. The elevation at this point is 2580 ft. Also located here is a "forest" of dwarf oak trees. Because of the winds and location, these trees which normally grow to 115 ft. high range only from 10 to 20 ft. in this location, and many are over 200 years old.
This is a scenic stop you need to make as you travel along this highway.
