Over the centuries, the castle of Maintenon has undergone many transformations. The defensive character of the primitive castle was permanently erased in favor of the comfortable and modern aristocratic residence.
The most important modifications will be made in the 16th century by Jean Cottereau and in the 17th century by Madame de Maintenon. The relationship between Madame de Maintenon and King Louis XIV favored the development and expansion of the castle. In the 19th century, the Duke Paul de Noailles and the architect Henri Parent will modify the facades of the main courtyard. Duke Paul de Noailles and his wife Alicia de Rochechouart Mortemart modernize the castle and bring comfort. The descendants of Duke Paul de Noailles, Mr. and Mrs. Raindre will inherit a domain very damaged by the Second World War. They will attach a lot of importance to the refurbishment.
The lords of Maintenon: The presence of a castle in Maintenon has been attested since the 13th century. It belongs to the line of Amaury, the lords of Maintenon ... It remains in their possession until the sixteenth century, when they encounter financial difficulties that led them to give way to the stronghold.
Jean Cottereau: The lordship is then bought by Cottereau, financier and steward of the Finances of King Louis XII. It embellishes and greatly enlarges the castle which will then pass to his descendants.
Madame de Maintenon: In 1674, Françoise d'Aubigné, future Madame de Maintenon bought the entire estate: castle, land, farms, etc., thanks to the financial support of King Louis XIV, hoping to retire for his old days. The main extensions of the castle from 1686 are closely related to the construction of the aqueduct and the stay of the king at the castle on this occasion. After 1688, she will not stay at the castle anymore.
The Noailles and Raindre families: In 1698, without direct descent, Madame de Maintenon will leave the domain, as a dowry, to her niece Françoise Amable d'Aubigné during her marriage with Adrien Maurice, Duke of Ayen then Duke of Noailles. The castle will remain in the family of Noailles.
In 1983, Mr. and Mrs. Raindre, current owners and descendants of the Noailles family, leave the estate to the Mansart Foundation to safeguard this majestic heritage.
The County Council of Eure-et-Loir: In 2005, the Foundation entrusts the management of the castle to the County Council of Eure-et-Loir.
Today, the County Council of Eure-et-Loir assumes the entire maintenance, management, operation and animation of the site.

Au fil des siècles, le château de Maintenon a connu de nombreuses transformations. Le caractère défensif du château fort primitif s’est effacé définitivement au profit de la résidence aristocratique confortable et moderne.
Les plus importantes modifications seront réalisées au XVIème siècle par Jean Cottereau et au XVIIème siècle par Madame de Maintenon. La relation entre Madame de Maintenon et le roi Louis XIV favorisa les aménagements et les agrandissements du château. Au XIXème siècle, le duc Paul de Noailles et l’architecte Henri Parent modifieront les façades de la cour d’honneur. Le duc Paul de Noailles et sa femme Alicia de Rochechouart de Mortemart moderniseront le château et y amèneront du confort. Les descendants du duc Paul de Noailles, M. et Mme Raindre hériteront d’un domaine très endommagé par la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ils attacheront beaucoup d’importance à le remettre en état.
Les seigneurs de Maintenon: La présence d’un château à Maintenon est attestée depuis le XIIIème siècle. Il appartient à la lignée des Amaury, les seigneurs de Maintenon…Il reste en leur possession jusqu’au XVIème siècle, époque à laquelle ils rencontrent des difficultés financières qui les conduit à céder la place forte.
Jean Cottereau: La seigneurie est alors achetée par Cottereau, financier et intendant des Finances du roi Louis XII. Il embellit et agrandit considérablement le château qui passera ensuite à sa descendance.
Madame de Maintenon: En 1674, Françoise d’Aubigné, future Madame de Maintenon achète l’ensemble du domaine : château, terres, fermes, etc., grâce au soutien financier du roi Louis XIV, en espérant s’y retirer pour ses vieux jours. Les principales extensions que connaît le château à partir de 1686 sont étroitement liées à la construction de l’aqueduc et aux séjours du roi au château à cette occasion. Passé 1688, elle ne séjournera plus au château.
Les familles Noailles et Raindre: En 1698, sans descendance directe, Madame de Maintenon lèguera le domaine, en dot, à sa nièce Françoise Amable d’Aubigné lors de son mariage avec Adrien Maurice, duc d’Ayen puis duc de Noailles. Le château restera alors dans la famille de Noailles.
En 1983, M. et Mme Raindre, propriétaires actuels et descendants de la famille des Noailles, lèguent le domaine à la Fondation Mansart pour sauvegarder ce majestueux patrimoine.
Le Conseil départemental d’Eure-et-Loir: En 2005, la Fondation confie la gestion du château au Conseil départemental d’Eure-et-Loir.
Aujourd’hui, le Conseil départemental d’Eure-et-Loir assume en intégralité l’entretien, la gestion, l’exploitation et l’animation du site.
