Portland was settled on 19 November 1834. Victoria's first successful British settlement was there, on the west coast of what is now Victoria.Tho it wasn't until 5 August 1850 that Queen Victoria signed a Constitution, which then enable the NSW Government in July 1851 to pass legislation to separate the southern part of 'New South Wales', into the 'Colony of Victoria'.
