A white marble headstone located in the Protestant Cemetery notes an unusual death it reads:
1849IN MEMORY OF
CHRISTIAN SCHULER,
A native of
Wurtemberg, Germany;
BORN JAN. 13, 1836,
KILLED IN A MINING CLAIM
Dec. 11, 1880.
Aged 44 Yrs. 10Ms.
28 Ds.
GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.
I wasn't able to locate any other pertinent information for him. Callahan was a very active mining town during the mid-1800s through the early part of the 20th century (the 1849 on the headstone refers to the Gold Rush of 1849 which brought thousands of men to California to seek their fortunes in gold claims). The community has slowly shrunk down to its current population over the decades due to the ceasing of mining operations and forestry operations in the region.
