This trig pillar is situated amongst the quiet country roads north-east of the town of Banchory and just north of Crathes Castle. It is set on the edge of a field close to a public road where it is visible. It lies only 107 metres above sea level but the views in all directions are clear to neighbouring hills.
STEEPNESS: None, the pillar sits in a reasonably flat field in an area not much higher than the valley of the River Dee to the south.
TERRAIN: From Banchory, entirely on roads. The 50 feet to the pillar is of short grass of a field currently used for grazing.
ACCESSIBILITY: Parking is restricted on narrow minor roads, but the pillar is easily reachable from the eastern edge of Banchory. A wooden fence with a couple of strands of barbed-wire needs to be negotiated to reach the pillar which is around 50 feet from the roadside.
NAVIGATION: From the eastern edge of Banchory, after a few hundred yards, a minor road branches off the A93 and runs in a general north-east direction along the northern boundary of Crathes Castle for around a mile. When the collection of houses at The Neuk are reached, turn left at a junction and head north. After a few hundred yards the pillar comes into view on the left on the south side of a wall that forms the northern edge of the field.
DANGER: Care needed when climbing the fence.
