The following information is from a bronze plaque mounted on the brick wall below the bell.
This bell was cast in 1877 by the Meneely foundry of West Troy, New York, and installed in the original market building constructed in 1876 and burnt in 1926.
The bell was salvaged, hung in St. Davids R.E. Church and in 1976 donated to the City of Ottawa by the Northgrave family.
Originally, the bell was rung at the start and closing of each market day.
