Commissioned by the City of Ottawa for the International Year of the Child in 1979, this sculpture was then donated to the City by the artist. Fairbrother hand carved the Oolitic limestone into flowing organic shapes to complement the subject of the transition of childhood to adulthood. It depicts children engaged in various stages of growth and activity.
The title refers to the circle of life that incorporates birth and death and a celebration of the future. The artist describes the piece as a "representation of the human journey and a celebration of the life process with all its joys and frustrations".
An acclaimed Canadian sculptor, Fairbrother was one of four stone carvers commissioned by the federal government in the late 1970s to create original carvings for Parliament Hill and to work on the renovation of East Block.
Please note that while the Ottawa City Hall is opened 24/7 for people to walk through, the lights are dimmed after 5:00 pm. For this reason, it may be difficult to appreciate the sculpture's exceptional details.
