Herbert Emil Kaiser was born May 14, 1916, in Hepler, KS to the Rev. Oscar Kaiser and Lucie (Roschke) Kaiser. He was the fourth of eight children born to the Lutheran pastor and his wife, who was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. He died at his home in Stillwater surrounded by loving family members Saturday, February 18, 2017.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Stillwater, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery northwest of Coyle in the Pleasant Valley community. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
As a child, Kaiser moved with his family to Independence, KS and later to Cheney, KS. High school and junior college years were spent at Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE. He graduated with a teaching certificate after three years of college. He accepted a call to teach in a one-room mission school at Zion Lutheran Church, Guthrie, OK, and completed his B.S. from Concordia College in 1941.
He met Hilda Flasch of Coyle while teaching in Guthrie and they were married on December 2, 1942. He completed his M.S. degree at Oklahoma State University in 1943 and soon accepted a call as teacher/principal at St. Luke Lutheran School in Kansas City, KS. He later taught at Trinity Lutheran School, Mt. Clemens, MI, and St. John Lutheran School in Seward, NE, which was the laboratory school for Concordia Teachers College.
Wherever he lived, Kaiser furthered his education. He attended the University of Kansas, the University of Michigan, and Nebraska University, where he was awarded the Ph.D. in 1958. In 1961 he joined the faculty of Kansas State University, where he was a professor in the College of Education, teaching Psychology and Guidance and Counsel- ing. At KSU, he served on the Graduate Council, many committees, and authored numerous articles in professional journals. He was instrumental in starting the Kansas chapter of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. After his retirement in 1982, he and his wife moved to Stillwater in 1987 to enjoy life in a university town and be near relatives in the area.
Kaiser was an active member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) his entire life. Besides teaching in parochial schools for twenty-four years, he served as Sunday school superintendent, organist, choir director in four churches, Sunday school and Bible Class teacher, Director of youth work, elder, and member of LCMS district boards.
A few of his many civic activities included serving as chairman of the Manhattan, KS PTA, member of the Lutheran Hospital Association, Riley County Mental Health Association, and chairman of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Manhattan, KS for six years. He was a certified teacher for Parent Effectiveness Training and certified for English for Speakers of Other Languages. In retirement he tutored many children and adults for the Stillwater Literacy Council and was a member of the Golden Kiwanis in Stillwater.
He participated in many sports. In college, he was a member of the basketball, football, and track teams. Later in life, he enjoyed bowling, boating, and fishing. He and his wife especially enjoyed travel and visited all fifty states, and over thirty countries on five continents. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and always gave thanks to God for his loving family and his busy, productive life.
He was predeceased by his son, Roger Kaiser, and his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by one brother, Eldor Kaiser and wife Dolores, Kansas City, KS; his wife, Hilda, of Stillwater; son Donn Kaiser and wife Ann Elise, Springfield, MO; daughter-in-law Shari Kaiser, Newton, KS; daughter Karen Parsons and husband Lark, Farmington, NM; seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Bret Kaiser, Springfield, MO; Michelle Thoenen and husband Jim, St. Louis, MO; Rebecca Thomson and husband Gary, Larned, KS; James Kaiser and wife Tomoko, Aliso Viejo, CA; Dustin Parsons and wife Noel, Kirtland, NM; Jennifer Ahl and husband Lance, and Melissa Parsons, of Carlsbad, CA.
