This zinc monument has the details common to many zinc headstones, and below the main panel on the front is the family name, "Steffens". The panel itself says:

In Memory Of

Capt. John H. Steffens

Born
Mar. 24, 1835

Died
April 29, 1879.

Gone, but not forgotten.

Above is a bouquet of flowers, and the three links of the Odd Fellows below the compass and square of the Freemasons. Below the second panel is "1879", the year that Captain Steffens died, and between the panel text is a set of clasped hands, suggesting a good marriage. Note the missing screw. The text is:

She goeth to the
grave to weep there,
A
tribute of affection
to a devoted husband.

Above are another bouquet of flowers and an angel in supplication. The third side has another bouquet above the panel, which is also missing a screw, and which depicts a female hand, pointing Heavenward, with "Only waiting". Below is "Christ is our hope."

The fourth panel has only text, "A brave soldier true patriot and useful citizen". Below it is "In after time we'll meet thee." Above is another bouquet, along with an American flag, wrapped around its staff in mourning.

There is also a simple footstone, with "J.H. Steffens". It could use a little cleanup.
