This very large veterans memorial stands on the west side of the Calhoun County Courthouse grounds in downtown Hampton. On its many granite blocks, stacked on the base on either side of an elegant arch with an interior monument, the names of over a thousand men and women of Calhoun County served in the Armed Forces since the county was founded.
The base of the memorial consists of 5 low blocks of gray granite, inscribed from left to right as follows:
COURAGE
DUTY
[seals of the 5 branches of US Armed Forces]
HONOR
COUNTRY
In the center of the memorial, an arch is engraved
CALHOUN COUNTY VETERAN'S MEMORIAL
in the foreground of the arch stands a rectanhular monument engraved with a Federfal Eagle with these words:
"Dedicated in memory and honor of the men and women who serve their country in the Armed Forces
November 11, 2004"
Extending from the base on either side of the arch are stacked blocks of gray granite engraved with the names of every person from Calhoun County who has served in the Armed Forces presumably from the Revolutionary war through the current global war on terror. It's difficult to know how many wars are represented here, since no wars are mentioned. However there is plenty of room left on this memorial to engraved the names of future members of the United States Armed Forces for Calhoun County.
