The Panathenaic Stadium was built for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.
The present-day stadium was built on the site of a stadium built in about 330BC and excavated in 1869. That stadium was used for various local events before being refurbished and expanded for use in the opening and closing ceremonies of 1896 games, as well as many of the track and field events from that games.
It has continued its multipurpose role up to and including the 2004 Olympic Games.
Access is 6 Euros/person. The stadium is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
