Georgios Averoff was a wealthy Athens businessman who provided most of the funding for the Panathenaic Stadium.

After the founder of the games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin approached - and was rejected by - a basically bankrupt Greek government, he turned to the private sector.

Averoff answered the call, and provided most of the funding for the stadium. Without his financial backing, the Games would most likely have collapsed in insolvency.

A great biography of Averoff may be found here: (visit link)

The slightly larger than life (7.5 foot)statue is carved from marble. The base is also of white marble.

Statue is available for viewing at any time. There is no fee.
