The Church was built between 1879 and 1882 in the Victorian Free Gothic style to replace the original St John's, which was demolished to make way for the main street ( High St ) of Fremantle. The church was designed by William Smith of London. The foundation stone ( which there is no sign ) was laid by Bishop Hale and the church was consecrated in July 1882. It is built of local limestone and uses the local jarrah timber for the celing and the flooring, the organ was installed in 1884 and upgraded several times the last being in 1996 when it was converted to electricity
The church is situated in St John's Square, a public open space in the middle of the City
