The War Memorial was originally erected to commemorate those from North Fremantle who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. The names of those who lost their lives in World War Two were added to the memorial at a later date.
The memorial is a statue of a soldier, sculpted in marble, facing south and standing on a granite plinth, surrounded by a cast-iron rung fence.
The foundation stone was laid on the 21st January 1923 by the Governor of Western Australia, Sir Francis Newdegate, who also performed the unveiling ceremony on the 26th August 1923
