While the historic courthouse and its grounds are owned by Denton County, the contributing buildings are privately owned. The square is dominated by the 1896 county courthouse, which is still used by the county despite a larger, more modern courthouse's being built a few years ago. The district is made up primarily of buildings and other objects -- the old Confederate Memorial and John Denton's grave are contributors -- from inside the area bounded by Oak, Hickory, Locust, and Elm Streets, but there are a few contributors that are within a block just outside that range. Even the sidewalks, placed by the WPA, are contributors, although current developments suggest that they may be in for a replacement after the city and county resolve just exactly who will maintain them.
The square has historically been plagued by fires, and on December 26, 2017, fire claimed a long-time square fixture, the Downtown Mini Mall, at 108 N Locust St.
