The dedication at the base of the window is in Manx Gaelic and is shown below:
“Juan y Crellin
Saggyrt y Skeeray Sheh 1798 – 1808”
The window commemorates Juan (John) Crellin who was rector of Kirk Bride and a Vicar General of the Diocese of Sodor and Man.
A Vicar General, or Chancellor of the Diocese, is an ecclesiastical law officer who is appointed by the Bishop.
The Vicar General is a judge who presides in the ecclesiastical courts of the Island. The Islands ecclesiastical courts are respectively the Consistory Court and the Chapter Court.
The main role of the Consistory Court is to consider applications for ecclesiastical dispensations, licenses, or authorisations, to allow works affecting consecrated land or buildings. At the time Juan Crellin served the Consistory Court had jurisdiction in matrimonial matters (transferred to the High Court of Justice in 1884) and clerical discipline (transferred to Disciplinary Tribunals in 2006).
The Chapter Court no longer sits but formerly oversaw the swearing of churchwardens, heard presentment against the clergy and churchwardens, probate (transferred to High Court in 1884) and illegitimacy cases (transferred to the High Bailiff in1921).
As Vicar General, Juan Crellin would have been a member of the Islands Legislative Council and had a seat and the right to vote in the Island’s parliament – Tynwald.
