The first milestone on the A917 road out of St Andrews, heading down the North Sea coast bound for the East Neuk of Fife, is one mile from the town centre on the south-eastern outskirts. It is situated on the pavement on the left (coast) side of the road beside a fallen wall.
Like the other milestones in the area, it is of whitewashed whinstone with a cast-iron cap, which is more rusted than the others on this road. The black lettering on the cap is of cursive script, the placenames all abbreviated.
The three destinations heading away south-eastwards are Anstruther, Kilrenny and Pittenweem, all reached from the B9131 road that branches off from the A917 half a mile away. There are no places mentioned on the A917 itself, including Crail. On the other side, the three placenames heading northwards are St Andrews, Leuchars and Newport-on-Tay. The usual benchmark adorns the stone on one side.
This is the easiest stone to reach on this road as a pavement runs all the way from the town to this point.
