Albert David "Alby" Lowerson was born in Myrtleford, Victoria in 1896, and worked as a gold miner after leaving school. Enlisting in the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) in 1915, he was too late to get to Gallipoli, so was sent to fight in the Western Front in March 1916.

Alby ended up being wounded on four separate occasions while in France. He was personally awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V in March 1919. He returned to his home town of Myrtleford in northern Victoria, and became a farmer.

In time for ANZAC Day, 2015, a bronze statue of Alby was unveiled here in Myrtleford. A good article to read on that is: (visit link)
