The Belfry of Boulogne-sur-Mer, former Romanesque dungeon is the oldest building in Boulogne. From a height of 37 meters, it offers the last vestiges of a first counting castle.
Dating from the twelfth century it was to be completed by other buildings larger and more comfortable. Philippe Hurepel yielded it to the bourgeois of the town when the castle, established at the eastern corner of the ramparts, was completed.
The beneficiaries made it their belfry, symbol of the communal liberties of the city. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005, it houses a small lapidary museum.
The belfry which is attached to the town hall is the oldest monument of the fortified city. It houses antique furniture from the region and a beautiful stained glass representing Godefroy de Bouillon, member of the House of Boulogne.
It is a square Romanesque tower surmounted by an octagonal floor. Its construction was carried out over a long period, started in the 12th century and will not be completed until the 18th century.
The Revolution almost made disappear this symbol of the Old Regime but the reason prevailed because the belfry was the only place of the city where one could observe the enemy boats.
Moreover, a watchman remained at his post until 1922. From the walkway we enjoy a full panorama of the city and its surroundings and sometimes to England on a clear day.

Le Beffroi de Boulogne-sur-Mer, ancien donjon roman est le plus vieil édifice de Boulogne. D'une hauteur de 37 mètres, il offre les derniers vestiges d'un premier château comtal.
Datant du XIIe siècle il devait être complété par d'autres bâtiments plus vastes, et plus confortables. Philippe Hurepel le céda aux bourgeois de la ville lorsque le château, établi à l'angle oriental des remparts, fut achevé.
Les bénéficiaires en firent leur beffroi, symbole des libertés communales de la ville. Classé au Patrimoine Mondial de l’Humanité par l’UNESCO en 2005, il abrite un petit musée lapidaire.
Le beffroi qui est accolé à l'hôtel de ville est le plus vieux monument de la ville fortifiée. Il abrite des meubles anciens de la région ainsi qu'un beau vitrail représentant Godefroy de Bouillon, membre de la maison de Boulogne.
Il s’agit d’une tour romane carrée surmontée d’un étage octogonal. Sa construction s’est effectuée sur une longue période, débutée au XIIème siècle elle ne s’achèvera qu’au XVIIIème.
La Révolution a failli faire disparaître définitivement ce symbole de l'Ancien Régime mais la raison l'a emporté car le beffroi était le seul endroit de la ville d'où l'on pouvait observer les bateaux ennemis.
D'ailleurs, un guetteur est resté en poste à son sommet jusqu'en 1922. Depuis le chemin de ronde on profite d’un panorama complet sur la ville et ses environs et parfois jusqu’à l’Angleterre par temps clair.
