Text on the memorial:
9-11 WORLD TRAD CENTER MEMORIAL ELKO, NEVADA A tribute to all whose lives were lost An inspiration to all who visit This memorial was created to help reserve the memory of the innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the emergency personnel who put their lives on the line in New Yourk City, our local firefighters, police officers, and emergency responders, and our perseverance to maintain and celebrate our continued freedom as a nation. When the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey made available artifacts from the fallen World Trade Center towers after the tragic attack of September 11, 2001, the City of Elko was proud to become the recipient of a three-foot structural I-beam removed from the wreckage. (Inventory number I-28) The sculpture is oriented according to the angle of the sun at 10:22 a.m. on September 11, the moment of the collapse of the second tower. Each year at this day and time, sunlight shines through the silhouette of the first bird. Illuminating the opposite face of the box. About the design . . . **The sculpture, FREEDOM, represents the process of moving beyond the horrific act: a broken steel columns is elevated, and negative figures at the lower half of the sculpture give way to positive figures above. **The square granite base represents the footprint of the Twin Towers. **The pool encourages reflection and remembrance. **A series of circles and squares symbolizes unity and eternity. **Boxwoods planted in a grid are patterned after the 9-11 memorial at Ground Zero. **The memorial measures 17.76 feet from the ground level to the highest point of the sculpture, 100th scale of proposed height of World Trade Center Tower 1 in New York City. The year 1776 has a special meaning - Freedom.
