Chief Mathias Joe was a renown carver and spirit dancer. In the early 1900’s Chief Mathias Joe began carving totem poles at a spot under the Lions Gate Bridge in British Columbia, where he lived until the early ‘50’s.

Chief Mathias Joe, leader of the Capilano Indian band for more than 50 years, died in St. Paul’s Hospital Monday night at the age of 80.
