Wheelock Academy was first started in 1832 as a mission to the Choctaws. Over the years, it educated many young girls in culture, religious, academic, domestic skills and was overseen as a Choctaw Nation school.

An historical marker in front of this building on the school campus tells its history. It reads: In 1931 when the United States Government, through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, assumed responsibility for managing the Academy, provision were made for an Art Cottage building. Here students would be encouraged in the creative arts such as painting, weaving, quilting, jewelry and other assorted crafts. The building was demolished in 1980.

Today, all that remains are the two stone fireplace chimneys at either end of the building.
