[GER] Das Kaiser-Wilhelm-I.-Denkmal am Deutschen Eck in Koblenz wurde am 31. August 1897 in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Wilhelm II eingeweiht. Das Reiterstandbild wurde gegen Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges zerstört und die Reste abgebrochen.
Am 18. Mai 1953 wurde der verbliebene Sockel von Bundespräsident Theodor Heuss zum „Mahnmal der deutschen Einheit“ umfunktioniert. Zur Demonstration dieser Einheit wurden am Sockel die Wappen aller deutschen Länder sowie jene der ehemaligen Ostgebiete wie Pommern, Schlesien und Ostpreußen angebracht. Vier Jahre später wurde auch das Saarland hinzugefügt. Die Stelle des zerstörten Reiterstandbilds nahm ein Flaggenstock mit der Bundesflagge ein.
Mit der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands am 3. Oktober 1990 ergänzte man die Wappenreihe durch die Namen der fünf neuen Bundesländer.
Die Einweihung des wiederhergestellten Denkmals fand am 25. September 1993 statt. Zuvor war die fertiggestellte Rekonstruktion des ursprünglichen Reiterstandbildes auf dem Sockel installiert worden.
[ENG] The Kaiser Wilhelm I. monument at the Deutesches Eck (German Corner) in Koblenz was inaugurated on August 31,1897 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The equestrian statue was destroyed towards the end of the Second World War and the remains were demolished.
On 18 May 1953, the remaining pedestal of Federal President Theodor Heuss was converted into a "Memorial of German Unity". To demonstrate this unity, the coats of arms of all German states as well as those of the former eastern territories such as Pomerania, Silesia and East Prussia were placed on the pedestal. Four years later, Saarland was added. The destroyed equestrian statue was replaced by a flagpole with the federal flag.
With the reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990, the series of coats of arms was supplemented by the names of the five new federal states.
The inauguration of the restored monument took place on September 25,1993. Previously, the completed reconstruction of the original equestrian statue had been installed on the pedestal.
