The text of the plaque is: This memorial statue is dedicated to Medal of Honor recipient Private David Lewis Gifford Company B, 4th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry and all Dartmouth residents who served in the Civil War. 1861-1865.
His Medal of Honor information and citation is: GIFFORD, DAVID L.

Citation: Volunteered as a member of a boat crew which went to the rescue of a large number of Union soldiers on board the stranded steamer Boston and with great gallantry assisted in conveying them to shore, being exposed during the entire time to a heavy fire from a Confederate battery.
