Foreword: "CCVI" stands for "Congregatio (Sororum) Caritatis a Verbo Incarnato", which means "Congregation of (the Sisters of) Charity of the Incarnate Word" in Latin.---
Two life-size statues are sitting on a bench in the front lawn of Brackenridge Villa, an old CCVI Motherhouse located on the campus grounds of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.
The University (often abbreviated to just "UIW") is located on the grounds of San Antonio's CCVI. In 1897, three Sisters who had come from France in 1869 to fight a cholera epidemic bought 280 acres of land and the adjoining Brackenridge Villa from
George Washington Brackenridge, a man who made his fortunes during the Civil War and later became a philanthropist as well as advocate of women's suffrage and women's educational opportunities. The Sisters acquired the estate in order to establish San Antonio's CCVI, with the Villa as its interim Motherhouse.
The statues depict a CCVI Sister giving a lecture to a recruit on the sisterhood's Mission -- which includes lifelong service to people in need all over the world. A sign next to the bench reads:
"
LIVING THE CCVI MISSION
This second original sculpture on the UIW campus by artist Paul Tadlock was given by Mrs. Patricia Crain in memory of her husband, trustee Bill Crain, on the seventh anniversary of his death. It honors the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word for their continuing mission of service and the 125th anniversary of their founding of the University of the Incarnate Word. Mr. Crain was a celebrated business and civic leader, honored philanthropist, and devoted church leader. Together Bill and Pat Crain shared the Incarnate Word mission of service, especially young people in need.
Dedicated July 30, 2006"
