Located at the Collier State Park Logging Museum is a road grading piece of equipment. There is an interpretive display in front of it that reads:
The Fabulous "Fresno"
Logging requires Construction, Too
Roads are needed to move people, supplies, and equipment into the woods and to move logs cut. In 1883, millwright James Porteous invented a wide,
C-shaped metal bucket that transformed road-building.
The sensational Fresno scraper quickly found worldwide use,
from Oregon forests to the Panama Canal and beyond.
Pulled behind a horse or other equipment, the Fresno scraper leveled the roadbed while collecting the material for easy dumping.
Byadjusting the angle of the blade, the Fresno's efficient scrape -and-dump technology could be used to dig ditches as well as level roads.
Many static displays exist here, plan on spending at least one hour to view and appreciate all there is to offer here.
