Washington and Lee University is named after two famous Virginians: George Washington, who provided the school with its first major endowment in 1796 and Robert E. Lee, who served as president of the college from 1865 to 1870. It is currently the ninth oldest institute of higher education in America.

Although appearing to be a single structure, the stamp actually shows three separate buildings which together form what is known as the “Colonnade.” The building in the middle was the first to be completed and is named Washington Hall. It’s easy to spot Washington Hall – it’s the one with the eight-foot tall statue of George Washington (dubbed ‘Old George’ by the students) standing atop its cupola. The statue that’s there today is a bronze replica of the wooden original which had become badly deteriorated.

The building to the left of Washington Hall is called Payne Hall. It was the second building of the “Colonnade” to be completed. It was named in honor of Judge Barton Payne and currently houses the English department and the Medieval Renaissance Studies program. The last building to be finished stands to the right of Washington Hall and is named Robinson Hall. It was originally built as a dormitory but now houses the department of mathematics. It was named in honor of early contributor John “Jockey John” Robinson.

This is the second stamp honoring Washington and Lee University. The first was an adhesive postage stamp issued 50 years prior to this postal card on the 200th anniversary of the school’s founding. Both stamp and card show the same buildings of the “Colonnade.”
